Gizmo: Fractions, Percents, and Decimals For my thematic unit we'll be administering a survey. We'll use the survey data to create charts and graphs. A tool like the gizmo below would better help my students understand the relationship among these three math functions. It will hopefully make their end products better.
Gizmo: Percent of Change Again, this tool will be used to help my students make better conclusions about the survey data we collect. The gizmo uses a sliding ruler to help them learn how to turn story problems into math functions. I will be asking them to interpret survey data at the end of the unit, and this tool would help ease the frustration many students feel when converting words into equations.
Gizmo: Mean, Median, and Mode Our survey data, and the work products we create from them, will be better if the students understand the meanings of these three terms. My students also need to know how outliers can skew the data. This tool lets students play around with data sets to more easily understand concepts, which should make for better real world understanding of the data.
Gizmo: Seasons Around the World Some of the survey questions we ask will be about average yearly temperatures and latitude. This gizmo shows the correlation between the two very nicely. Students will view this simulation, change latitudes and view the effects of those changes, and then write more clear survey questions, or be able to explain the questions to respondents. http://screencast.com/t/ZGRmZjFi
